On the sociology of youth, for youth, and with youth: studying and preserving the past for the present and the future
(in memory of Russian Sociologist Y. R. Vishnevsky)

The article analyzes the contribution of the leading Russian sociologist of youth studies, Professor Yuri R. Vishnevsky, to the development of the sociology of youth and the preservation of the memory of the Great Patriotic War. The authors present the development and deepening of youth research in the Middle Urals through the analysis of two large-scale monitoring studies initiated by Professor Vishnevsky. The first is “Sociocultural Portrait of Students of the Sverdlovsk Region” (being conducted since 1995). In the life world of student youth, Yu. R. Vishnevsky always emphasized the importance of culture. In conjunction with the traditions and values of Russian society, the historical memory of the Great Victory as the most important basis for preserving national identity predetermined the development of the second project. The second is “Russian Students on the Great Patriotic War” (conducted since 2005), which is considered in the article not only from the standpoint of its scientific value in the development of the sociology of youth, but also from the perspective of strengthening the professional sociological community in the Russian regions. In many ways, it is the role of the personality of Yu. R. Vishnevsky. The broad involvement of many Russian sociologists in the discussion and refinement of this project’s methodology, as well as the collection and analysis of the collected sociological data defined Vishnevsky’s work. The conclusion provides a brief overview of the articles prepared for this thematic issue by Yu. R. Vishnevsky's students and colleagues, both based on the results of the fifth wave of monitoring dedicated to the memory of the Great Victory, and on a number of regional and interregional studies that address this issue, largely expanding on Professor Vishnevsky's ideas.
