The influence of religiosity on marital and family attitudes of modern youth

The article examines the influence of religious identity on the attitude of modern youth towards the institution of marriage and family. The authors of the article focus on the problem of the crisis of the modern family, which manifests itself in changing social roles in the family, expanding its boundaries, reducing the number of marriages and increasing the number of divorces, as well as in the growing number of unregistered marriages and the transformation of attitudes towards the birth of children. These transformations are especially pronounced among the most active part of society – young people, who are characterized by a shift from the traditional way of family relations to a new model based on individualism and the pursuit of personal well-being. The authors consider religiosity as a factor that may influence the return to the traditional understanding of marriage and family. Playing a significant role in the orientation and values of a person, religiosity influences the choice of a partner for marriage, ideas about the role of men and women in the family, understanding family responsibilities and values. However, today, against the background of secularization processes, the relationship between religion and family is weakening, and therefore it becomes urgent to find out the influence of religiosity on the marital and family attitudes of modern youth. A sociological study conducted by the authors using a questionnaire survey of young people in Moscow confirmed the hypothesis that young people who profess a particular religion have more traditional views on marriage and starting a family than those who have no religious beliefs. In particular, among young believers, the level of disapproval of non-traditional forms of relationships is 30% higher than among their peers who do not profess religion. Young believers strive for an earlier marriage and the birth of children, taking a more active position in matters of childbearing. Based on the analysis of empirical data, the nature of the change in value attitudes towards family and marriage is shown depending on the degree of religiosity and the characteristic types of marital and family attitudes are determined. The study showed a positive relationship between the degree of religiosity and marital and family intentions. The authors of the article conclude that, combined with other economic and social factors, youth religiosity can become an important tool in overcoming the family crisis.
