The article contains a brief description of the local identity of the urban community of the city of Belgorod, the resulting qualitative stage of sociological research (focus groups). The theoretical model of the development of local identity is based on the works of P.L. Krupkina performed in the tradition of Emile Durkheim. The main elements of local identity considered in the article are: significant places (including the symbolic center); understanding of the local geography (medium- and large-scale); symbolic values of local identity; myths samostoyaniya / pride of themselves; rituals of reproduction of identity; pantheon of heroes – real and mythical; ideas of the structure of the community: the core («elite»), borders, constituents (strata segments).
