Perception of social justice by Russians according to the data of a European survey

The article is devoted to the perception of social justice by the respondents and is based on materials of the European social research (2008, 2016). The author connects the relevance of studying this topic with the threat of reducing the stability of Russian society.  In the ESS database, there were selected questions that allow to analyze the perception of social justice. These questions, focused on attitudes toward income distribution in society and differences in the standard of living, have not been previously considered by researchers in connection with this topic. The secondary analysis of the ESS has revealed that in 2016, compared to 2008, Russian society maintains a more equitable distribution of income among members of society, and also the expectation that differences in the standard of living between people should not be polar. There is an increase in the proportion of people who disagree with the fact that the difference in income between people should be large, since there is also a large difference in their abilities and efforts. Such dynamics can reflect a growing concern in society, the polarization of income, leading to a division into the very poor and the very rich. In a cross-country context, it is shown that, on average, Russian respondents are not inclined to equalize income among the population as well as residents of European countries such as Slovenia and Finland. The respondents from Poland and the Czech Republic are in harmony with the equalization of income, regardless of the abilities and efforts put by the person. Using the CHAID decision tree method, the characteristics of respondents who share and do not share justice judgments are given. The research reveals that the studied variables about equity are most related to the level of income of the respondent.
