One tries to classify their involvement in mass protests either as their instigators and promoters or as peace-makers. Most attention is thus paid to urban mutinies of different kinds and troubles connected with court trials and sermons. The paper does not deal with monastic participation in the doctrinal disputes and does so only slightly with their involvement in the conflicts within the Church. It has been demonstrated that, contrary to the image of a destructive force made of them in some studies, the monks were as frequently mediators and arbiters. A variety of primary sources have been used: legislation, hagiography, Church histories, letters.</p>
<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The scope of this article are diverse cases of monks' interaction with society.
