However, today there is an annual decrease in the number of young teachers and scientists. There is also a decrease in the main indicator of postgraduate performance – the proportion of people who defended their theses in the total number of postgraduate graduates. The success of scientific and educational activities of postgraduate students largely depends on the academic advisor, who helps the postgraduate student to master the necessary competencies and find their way in science. A mixed strategy was chosen for the research and two methods of data collection were used: document analysis and a sociological survey in the form of questionnaires. The method of document analysis analysed normative legal acts, statistical collections and analytical reports. Postgraduate students of all courses and forms of study at Russian universities were surveyed using the sociological survey method in the form of a questionnaire. As a result, it was concluded that the academic advisor is a superresource subject of scientific and educational activities of postgraduate students. Basically, postgraduate students and advisors choose a contractual and decision-making style of interaction, which implies a high level of control over the activities of postgraduate students. The article deals with the prospects of applying different styles of academic guidance depending on the year of postgraduate study. The authors consider it expedient to fix normatively the indicators of efficiency of activity of academic advisors of postgraduate students and to provide additional measures of their support.
