Migration and new European dimensions of Bulgarian identity

In the articlechanges in the national identity of Bulgarian citizens under the influence of active migration processes within the European Union (EU) are traced and the process of formation of a supranational (European) identity that has begun is substantiated. The results presented in the article refer to only one region of Bulgaria – the VelikoTarnovo region, since this is a region in which a population of exclusively Bulgarian ethnic origin is concentrated, which makes it possible to observe in a purer form the processes of transformation of the Bulgarian national identity. The results of the survey show that despite all the changes that the national identity undergoes, it continues to be the leading one for the self-identification of Bulgarian citizens at the present stage of the development of society, although there are already signs of the formation of elements of a supranational identity (“citizen of Europe” and “citizen of the world”).On the other hand, empirical results show that when transformation becomes a permanent feature of society, it often leads to the fact that instead of forming a supranational identity, reverse processes of localization and regionalization are observed, which leads to the formation of local identities. The results obtained at the local level, in the VelikoTarnovo region, confirm these conclusions.
